The training is currently being planned as an in person program, but if necessary may be delivered entirely virtually. Because of the nature of the training, a hybrid option will not be available. OVERVIEWUrbanPlan is a realistic, engaging, and academically demanding classroom-based curriculum in which students learn about the fundamental forces that affect development. Students experience the challenging issues, private and public sector roles, complex trade-offs, and fundamental economics in play when proposing realistic land use solutions to vexing growth challenges.
UrbanPlan volunteers are selected from experienced land use and real estate development professionals within the ULI District Council membership. As an UrbanPlan volunteer, you will be representing ULI in local communities and therefore expected to embrace the organization's mission and code of ethics. For more information, please visit:

QUALIFICATIONSWe also ask volunteers to have:
- Minimum of five (5) years of work experience in land use, real estate development, or a related profession
- Flexible schedule that allows 1-15 hours of program participation, in addition to a one day training
- Current ULI membership (or commitment to getting one prior to the training)
- Completed the application below describing how your experience, leadership skills and character makes you a good fit for this volunteer role that includes interacting with young populations. Please also disclose any relevant circumstances in your background, such as any criminal history.
TIME COMMITMENTIf you are selected, by filling out this application you are committing to:
- Attend a full day training (8am-4pm) in Philadelphia
- Exact location will be provided to selected applicants
- 4-5 hours dedicated to material review and reading assignments in preparation for the training
- A minimum of 1 hour at an UrbanPlan program throughout the year
REFERENCESPlease provide two professional references. It is preferred but not required that one reference be a current ULI member. An UrbanPlan Committee member may contact one or both references to ensure qualifications are met.
CHILD PROTECTION POLICYEvery person desiring to volunteer with UrbanPlan must familiarize himself or herself with ULI’s Child Protection Policy and all volunteers will be held to the requirements laid out in the Policy and agree to it by signing the form provided. You will receive training on this matter during your UrbanPlan Volunteer Training and annually once you become a volunteer. If deemed necessary, ULI will complete a background check on any individual desiring to volunteer with UrbanPlan.
Upon completion of this application, if necessary, a personal interview may be scheduled with an UrbanPlan representative to discuss the written application and suitability for a volunteer position. Applicants who have completed an interview and reference check will not be subject to a mandatory criminal background check. However, volunteers shall be subject to a background check at any time if determined necessary by ULI in order for us to best protect our students. By signing the attached Child Protection Policy, you consent to give ULI the authority to conduct such a check.
